Beth Ellery

Fashion Designer

As a designer, I see myself as a professional noticer of things, and I pay close attention to colours, not just when I'm choosing fabrics, but in the everyday items around me.

I'm a very sentimental person, so if I have fond memories of a place I'll forever love the colours present there. My Nana's house seemed to me to be the most elegant house in the world, and when I look at my things I see that I take those colours everywhere with me.

This colour is a mix of various deeps reds around me. My Nana's house had deep red curtains which I loved and cemented red as a luxurious colour in my mind. I like it when houses have one red chair. I took readings from a red carpet, a tamarillo and the foliage of a Japanese maple, until I had the deep rich red, I wanted.

This colour is matched to the ceramic ends of some hooks I bought recently. They are a very pale milky blue.

I enjoy unexpected colour combinations, like the addition of primary or pastel colours to an earthy colour palette. I always have fabric and paint swatches in my handbag.

Beth Ellery is a fashion designer who lives and works in Auckland. Beth originally studied architecture, graduating with a Bachelor's degree , before launching her own fashion label in 2002.

Beth's work is described as intelligent, exquisite, quality, feminine and timeless. The focuses of Beth's design are the patterns of the fabrics and the investigation of new ways of construction. Her design is innovative in that it is honest. She always puts the needs of the person wearing the garment first; "Instead of developing a collection based on a look or narrative, I aim to produce work that is more about the wearer and less about the development of a theme."
