Suzanne Hanly

Glass artist

When we started back in 1980 from a studio in Christchurch, we called ourselves 'No Flowers Glass’ because there were so many stained-glassed windows with floral themes, and we wanted to make contemporary work.

“We deliberately set out to raise the standard of design and overall quality of work being produced in glass in New Zealand, and one way we do that is by collaborating with New Zealand artists on high-profile projects,” says Suzanne.

I chose this colour for my kitchen walls because I had three different tones of wood in the room. My floor, my table and the kitchen cupboards. This slightly grey-blue ties everything together and tones down the yellows of the wood. I like that it is a slightly dirty blue and if I put out a bright ochre tablecloth, it fights it slightly in an interesting way.

This is the colour closest to the colour of my raincoat. I put this on, and it makes any bleak day so much better. It is a colour I feel profoundly comfortable in.

The gold concentrates your gaze on the face and give the icon an intensity that other colours don’t. It also doesn’t clash with the other colours. It just is.
